Many Firsts are starring in the US mid-term poll headlines: from Indian-American Aruna Miller becoming the first immigrant to hold the office of Lieutenant Governor in Maryland, to General Maura Healey making history as the US’ first openly lesbian governor.
News18 explains some of these firsts:
Healey is 1st lesbian elected governor in US
Democratic Attorney General Maura Healey has been elected governor of Massachusetts, making history as the nation’s first openly lesbian governor. Healey, the state’s first woman and openly gay candidate elected to the office, defeated Republican Geoff Diehl, a former state representative who had the endorsement of former President Donald Trump.

Healey addressed supporters at a downtown Boston hotel after her victory Tuesday night. “Tonight I want to say something to every little girl and every young LGBTQ person out there. I hope tonight shows you that you can be whatever, whoever you want to be and nothing and no one can ever get in your way except you own imagination and that’s not going to happen.” Healey said.
Two Firsts in Maryland – Immigrant LG & Black Governor
Indian-American Aruna Miller became the first immigrant to hold the office of Lieutenant Governor in Maryland. “Maryland, tonight you showed the nation what a small but mighty state can do when democracy is on the ballot. You chose unity over division, expanding rights over restricting rights, hope over fear. You chose Wes Moore and me to be your next Governor and Lieutenant Governor,” she wrote on Twitter shortly after her win.

Miller’s running mate Wes Moore also made a history in Maryland as he became the state’s first Black governor. He is only the third Black governor elected in the country. Moore beat Dan Cox in Maryland.

Moore’s victory flips a governor’s office from Republican to Democratic. Of the 36 governor’s races this year, Maryland and Massachusetts represented the best chances for Democrats to regain a governor’s office at a time when the GOP holds a 28-22 edge in governor’s seats. Republican Gov. Larry Hogan is term limited. Only two other Black politicians have ever been elected governor in the United States — Virginia’s Douglas Wilder in 1989, and Deval Patrick of Massachusetts in 2006. Democrat Stacey Abrams would become the nation’s first Black female governor if she wins her Georgia rematch against Republican Gov. Brian Kemp.
With the slogan “leave no one behind,” the former combat veteran and former CEO of one of the nation’s largest anti-poverty organizations campaigned on creating equal opportunity for Maryland residents.
I defied the odds to become a Rhodes Scholar, Army officer & CEO.
Now, I’m announcing my run for Maryland Governor.
Because I believe no matter our start—we all deserve an equal opportunity to succeed.

Sarah Huckabee Sanders 1st woman elected Arkansas governor
Former White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders was elected Arkansas governor on Tuesday, becoming the first woman to lead the state and the highest profile Trump administration official in elected office.
Congratulations to @SarahHuckabee on becoming the first woman governor in Arkansas’ history.

Sanders defeated Democratic nominee Chris Jones in the race for governor in her predominantly Republican home state, where former President Donald Trump remains popular. Sanders had been heavily favored to win the race, which also included Libertarian nominee Ricky Dale Harrington.
Sanders shattered state fundraising records with her campaign, which focused primarily on national issues. Sanders, the daughter of former Gov. Mike Huckabee, regularly promised to use the office to fight President Joe Biden and the “radical left.”
Amid GOP gains, Dem Frost is 1st Gen Zer to win House seat
Amid Republican gains in the U.S. House races in Florida, Democrat Maxwell Alejandro Frost became the first member of Generation Z to win a seat in Congress.
Most Florida races for the U.S. House of Representatives went according to expectation Tuesday night, including Republican Anna Paulina Luna’s win against Democrat Eric Lynn in the 13th District, a St. Petersburg-based district formerly represented by Democrat Charlie Crist.
Frost is a former March For Our Lives organizer seeking stricter gun control laws and has stressed opposition to restrictions on abortion rights. Gen Z generally refers to those born between the late 1990s to early 2010s. To become a member of Congress, candidates must be at least 25 years old.
Frost celebrated on Twitter:
